17.2.2. CROSS SECTORAL DIALOGUE ABOUT SDGS
TSUOS is firmly committed to advancing the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) through engaging and facilitating cross-sectoral dialogue. Recognising that impactful progress requires cooperation across academia, government, civil society, and the private sector, TSUOS organises and participates in conferences, forums and roundtables both regionally and globally.
The conferences below illustrate TSUOS’s active engagement in dialogues not only regionally but also globally, involving government bodies, NGOs, academic institutions and international partners:
Date: Held on 15 February 2025, in honour of the “International Day of Women & Girls in Science” (11 February). Agenda.
Purpose: To discuss issues of women’s participation in science, the development of inclusive education systems, and strengthening international cooperation on gender equality.
Partners: Jointly organised with the Senate of the Oliy Majlis, the Republican Commission on Women, Family and Gender, the Ministry of Higher Education, Science & Innovations, the Youth Affairs Agency, the British Council in Uzbekistan, the Confucius Institute at TSUOS, among others.
Key focus: Highlighted inclusive education, gender equality (SDG 5) and “no one left behind” in science and education.
Date: 27 September 2024 in Beijing at the Beijing University of Foreign Languages and Culture, marking the 20th anniversary of the Confucius Institutes.
TSUOS involvement: Professor Saodat Nasirova (TSUOS / Director of the Confucius Institute in Uzbekistan) was honoured for 10 years of service; TSUOS Rector Professor Gulchehra Rikhsieva’s congratulatory speech was presented.
Significance: Serves as a platform for strengthening global cooperation in education and cultural exchange (particularly China-Uzbekistan) through Confucius Institutes.
Date: 13 May 2024 (in Samarkand) under the theme “Expanding women’s economic, social and political rights and opportunities: a regional approach”.
Purpose: To foster regional experience-sharing, best practices and strategic approaches towards gender equality (SDG 5) among Asian countries.
TSUOS Role: TSUOS Rector moderated, and faculty contributed through presentations on gender and development issues.
Date: 27-28 September 2024 in Turkiye (Istanbul Technical University).
TSUOS Role: The Rector of TSUOS took part in the event.
Significance: Reflects TSUOS’s active engagement in bi-lateral higher education cooperation (Uzbekistan–Turkiye) and emphasises international cross-sector dialogue on education.
TSUOS participated in this forum, which focuses on humanitarian exchange and cooperation between Central Asia and China.
Significance: Emphasises not only regional (Central Asia) but also trans-regional collaboration (with China) in academic and humanitarian domains.
Date: 2024
Purpose: To connect students with employers and create opportunities for internships and jobs.
Partners: Ministry of Employment and Labor Relations, private companies, embassies, and government agencies.
Key Focus: Supporting youth employment and decent work opportunities
Date: 2024
Purpose: To enhance youth employability and global career readiness through cooperation with embassies, international organizations, and government institutions.
Significance: Demonstrates TSUOS’s active collaboration with government ministries and foreign embassies to achieve SDG 8 – Decent Work and Economic Growth.
Regional Roundtables and International Workshops
In addition to its annual forum, TSUOS organises a series of regional and international dialogues throughout the year:
- Regional Roundtables: These focus on Central Asia-specific challenges such as youth inclusion in sustainability, preservation of cultural heritage, and environmental education. Stakeholders include government representatives, regional NGOs, community leaders and academics.
- International Workshops: TSUOS collaborates with global partners and international associations to host workshops on topics such as cross-cultural sustainable development, source studies for cultural sustainability, and capacity building for youth and educators. These engagements support the university’s broad cooperation beyond Central Asia into Europe, the Middle East and Asia.
Partnerships for Dialogue
TSUOS works collaboratively with a broad range of stakeholders to ensure multi-level, multi-sectoral dialogue:
- National agencies: such as the Ministry of Higher Education, Science and Innovations of Uzbekistan; Ministry of Ecology, Environmental Protection and Climate Change; Youth Affairs Agency of the Republic of Uzbekistan.
- International organisations: including the Erasmus+ programme, UNESCO, UNDP and regional networks of universities.
- Civil society: regional and international NGOs focused on sustainability education, gender equity, youth engagement and cultural heritage.
- Academic partners: universities and research centres worldwide offering co-hosted events, joint panels and exchange of expertise.
Outcomes and Impact
Through these dialogues, TSUOS has achieved:
- Increased awareness of SDG-aligned themes among students, faculty, youth organisations and public stakeholders.
- Integration of sustainability literacy and ethics into curricula and extra-curricular activities.
- Enhanced collaborative frameworks between academia, government and NGOs for SDG-driven projects and research.
- A more globally connected platform for TSUOS to contribute to international SDG discourse and practice.
TSUOS remains dedicated to operating as a hub for cross-sectoral dialogue, bridging local communities and global networks to accelerate progress toward the Sustainable Development Goals.
