Department of “Chinese philology”
The Department of Chinese Philology was founded on the basis of the Oriental Institute of Turkestan, founded in 1918. The founders are the great scientists of the 20th century, such as I.A. Kissen and U.M. Mamatokhonov, who were not only the founders of Sinology in Uzbekistan, but also great linguists whose works were known to the whole world. Senior teachers O.A.Vagin, N.Khokhlov, I.Ruzboev, M.I.Muldakova, G.I.Larionov, N.O.Levushkina, M.I.Molozhatova participated in the further development of the department. The first lectures on Chinese language and literature were read by B.A. Pestovsky. In 1924, the University of Oriental Studies of Turkestan joins the Tashkent State University as a faculty of Oriental Studies (today – National University named after Mirzo Ulugbek). By that time, I.D. Polivanov, the author of the 304-page textbook “Modern Chinese”, was among the teachers. By 1930, the Faculty of Oriental Studies at the National University stops its work. In 1944, his work was resumed again. Since 1951, thanks to the senior teacher M.I. Molozhatova, they began to teach Chinese for the first time.
In 1957, the Department of Chinese Philology was opened. It was the first department for the education and training of sinologists not only in Uzbekistan, but throughout Central Asia. Speaking about the scientific direction of the department’s work, by 1980 it trained personnel not only for Central Asia (the Republic of Kazakhstan and Kyrgyzstan), but also for Bulgaria, Mongolia, Poland and Laos. This one shows that by the 1970s and 1980s, the Department of Chinese Philology had reached the international level. On September 2, 2014, the President of the Republic of Uzbekistan issued a decree UP-2228, in accordance with which the Faculty of Chinese Studies was opened at the Tashkent State University of Oriental Studies. Chinese Philology became part of the faculty as the Department of Chinese Philology.
