Food Waste Generation Report (2025)
Overview
This report provides an estimate of the solid waste generated by Tashkent State University of Oriental Studies (TSUOS) during the 2025 reporting period. The assessment covers waste generated from academic buildings, administrative facilities, student dormitories, and university catering services.
Total Waste Generation
According to the records maintained by the university and waste management service providers, the total volume of waste generated from all university buildings and student dormitories during 2025 amounted to 600.6 cubic metres (m³).
To estimate the weight of the waste, a standard municipal solid waste density factor of 0.3 tonnes per cubic metre (t/m³) was applied, which is commonly used for mixed municipal waste consisting of food waste, plastics, paper, packaging materials, garden waste, and other household-type waste.
Calculation:
600.6 m³ × 0.3 t/m³ = 180.18 tonnes
Therefore, the estimated total amount of waste generated by the university in 2025 was approximately 180.2 tonnes.

Food Waste Generated by University Catering Services
The university catering facilities generate food waste as part of their daily operations. Based on information provided by kitchen staff, the following estimates were recorded:
- Academic Year Period (9 Months)
During the academic year, university cafeterias operate five days per week and generate approximately 15–20 kg of food waste per day. For calculation purposes, an average value of 17.5 kg per day was used.
- Average food waste: 17.5 kg/day
- Operating period: 195 working days
Food waste generated:
17.5 kg × 195 days = 3,412.5 kg
- Summer Period (3 Months)
During the summer period, cafeteria activity is significantly reduced, generating approximately 5 kg of food waste per day.
- Average food waste: 5 kg/day
- Operating period: 65 working days
Food waste generated:
5 kg × 65 days = 325 kg
Total Annual Food Waste
3,412.5 kg + 325 kg = 3,737.5 kg
Therefore, the university’s catering services generated approximately 3.74 tonnes of food waste during 2025.
Waste Composition
The university’s waste stream primarily consists of:
- Food waste from catering facilities;
- Plastic packaging materials and containers;
- Paper and cardboard;
- Mixed municipal waste;
- Garden waste, including grass, leaves, and tree branches;
- Household-type waste generated by academic buildings and dormitories.
Conclusion
In 2025, Tashkent State University of Oriental Studies generated approximately 600.6 m³ of waste, equivalent to an estimated 180.2 tonnes of mixed municipal solid waste. University catering facilities contributed approximately 3.74 tonnes of food waste. The university continues to promote responsible waste management practices and seeks to improve waste reduction, recycling, and environmental sustainability initiatives across its campus.
