Main Tasks of the Center
The principal tasks of the Center are as follows:
- To conduct comprehensive academic research on the cultures of the peoples of the East and on literary, historical, and philosophical sources in Oriental languages, while promoting Uzbekistan’s national values and cultural heritage internationally;
- To undertake scholarly research on Eastern culture and heritage, ancient monuments, and manuscripts; to train academic and teaching staff in these fields; and to conduct joint research with local and international partners;
- To conduct systematic research on literary, historical, and philosophical sources in Oriental languages and to promote Uzbekistan’s cultural and intellectual heritage within the international academic community;
- To study written sources created by Amir Timur, Alisher Navoiy, Zahiriddin Muhammad Babur, Mahmud Zamakhshari, and other eminent scholars and historical figures, particularly sources relating to the socio-political life, languages, cultures, and history of Eastern countries;
- To identify and study written monuments and historical documents relating to the history of Uzbekistan preserved in manuscript collections and archives worldwide; to prepare scholarly annotated editions of these sources; and to conduct research on manuscripts in Arabic, Persian, and Turkic languages preserved in manuscript collections and museums of Uzbekistan;
- To organize academic conferences, seminars, and round-table discussions at various levels on Eastern culture and heritage, the history of Oriental languages, literature, philosophy, and written monuments;
- To develop recommendations for integrating the content and scholarly significance of written monuments into undergraduate and graduate curricula in language, literature, history, and philosophy on the basis of textual research and critical analysis of manuscripts;
- To enhance the professional and academic competence of faculty members and researchers through seminars, round-table discussions, and academic conferences devoted to manuscripts and written heritage;
- To monitor and facilitate the timely implementation of University research projects devoted to written monuments and their study within the framework of state-funded research programmes;
- To regularly publish information on the Center’s activities and its research achievements in national and University publications;
- To initiate and support the translation into Uzbek of major scholarly works devoted to the written heritage of Uzbekistan’s ancestors;
- To engage leading Oriental studies scholars from Uzbekistan and abroad specializing in manuscripts and written heritage in the Center’s research activities;
- To contribute to the training of a new generation of specialists in Oriental studies capable of conducting research and critical analysis of the cultures of Eastern peoples and literary, historical, and philosophical sources in Oriental languages;
- To develop start-up and innovative projects jointly with talented undergraduate and graduate students and doctoral researchers, establish close cooperation with research institutions of the Academy of Sciences of the Republic of Uzbekistan, and organize academic seminars and project presentations.
Functions of the Center
In accordance with its assigned tasks, the Center performs the following functions:
- Conducts research in accordance with the University’s research priorities and the approved work plan of the Center;
- Organizes seminars, round-table discussions, conferences, and other academic events on current issues relating to Eastern culture and heritage;
- Prepares analytical articles and research reports based on the approved plans of the University and the Center in order to disseminate research findings to the academic community and the wider public;
- Participates in the development of academic courses and educational materials in cooperation with international specialists;
- Participates in other research and analytical projects consistent with the aims and objectives of the University;
- Engages University faculty members, undergraduate and graduate students, researchers, representatives of government bodies, analytical centers and research institutions, as well as international scholars and specialists, in the activities of the Center;
- Coordinates, in cooperation with relevant academic departments, undergraduate theses, master’s and doctoral dissertations, research projects, and analytical studies relating to written monuments, the history of Oriental languages, literature, philosophy, and culture;
- Studies advanced international experience in research on the culture, languages, literature, history, and philosophy of Eastern peoples and develops proposals for its application in academic research;
- Conducts in-depth research on sources relating to the culture, languages, literature, history, and philosophy of Eastern peoples and promotes Uzbekistan’s national values and cultural heritage internationally;
- Prepares scholarly and analytical materials on various fields and current issues of Eastern culture and heritage.
