A Lecture on the History and Intellectual Legacy of the Jadid Movement Was Held at Leiden University
Within the framework of the Erasmus+ International Credit Mobility (ICM) programme, Omonova Makhfurat Murod qizi, PhD and Associate Professor at Tashkent State University of Oriental Studies, delivered a lecture at the prestigious Leiden University in the Netherlands on the history, intellectual legacy, and contemporary significance of the Jadid movement.
During the lecture, the main ideas of the Jadid movement, which emerged in Turkestan in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, were examined in detail, with particular attention to its contribution to the development of education, science, publishing, and culture, as well as issues of national identity and sociocultural identity.
Special attention was given to the scholarly and educational activities and rich intellectual legacy of prominent representatives of the Jadid movement, including Mahmudkhoja Behbudi, Munavvarqori Abdurashidkhanov, Abdurauf Fitrat, and Abdulla Avloni.
The event also featured an exchange of views on the Jadids’ ideas concerning the modernization of society, reform of the education system, and the development of modern science and enlightenment. The significance of the Jadid intellectual legacy for the contemporary social, spiritual, and cultural development of Uzbekistan was also discussed.
The lecture was held in the format of an open academic dialogue, bringing together students, professors, and faculty members of Leiden University. The participants exchanged views and engaged in a question-and-answer session on the significance of Jadid ideas for understanding historical processes and contemporary sociocultural transformations in Uzbekistan.
The academic visit represented an important step towards strengthening international academic mobility, facilitating scholarly exchange, and expanding cooperation with foreign higher education institutions within the framework of the Erasmus+ programme.
Furthermore, the visit contributes to the further strengthening of academic and educational ties between Tashkent State University of Oriental Studies and Leiden University, as well as the development of academic cooperation among faculty members and researchers of the two universities.
