A Roundtable Discussion on “Women in the Literature of Uzbekistan and India” Was Held at TSUOS
On April 11, 2026, the Higher School of South Asian Languages and Literature at the Tashkent State University of Oriental Studies was visited by Dr. Neena Malhotra, Secretary of the Ministry of External Affairs of India (South Division), and H.E. Ms. Smita Pant, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of India to Uzbekistan. As part of the visit, a roundtable discussion titled “Women in the Literature of Uzbekistan and India” was held with the participation of faculty members and students.
During the roundtable, Ms. Smita Pant and Dr. Neena Malhotra emphasized the role of women in society in India and Uzbekistan, as well as their invaluable contributions to the development of science and culture. In particular, they expressed their gratitude to the Rector of the university, Professor G.Sh. Rikhsiyeva, for her efforts in advancing Indology and shared their proposals for future cooperation.
Additionally, Professor U.U. Muhibova delivered a presentation on “Women Writers of Uzbekistan and India.” In her speech, she discussed the works of prominent Uzbek and Indian poets — Zulfiya and Amrita Pritam, their friendship, and translation activities. She also presented proposals for future literary translation projects and their publication.
Furthermore, Senior Lecturer M.M. Murtozakhodjayeva presented a report on “The Image of a Woman in the novel ‘Pavlayi’” within the framework of Tamil literature studies. Third-year doctoral student Sh. Tilovmurodova delivered a presentation on “The Image of the Stranger in the Works of Nirmal Verma.” They also shared their proposals for further development of research in Indian literature and linguistics.
Moreover, during the roundtable, active undergraduate and graduate students who had studied in India and participated in youth forums shared their impressions and experiences in Hindi. The guests highly appreciated the students’ enthusiasm and their proficiency in Hindi, expressing their readiness for continued cooperation in the development of Indology.
